This participant in this research were 39 students second semester at English Department Universitas Pancasakti Tegal. Qualitative method was applied in this study. The researcher also used triangulation with three instruments. Questionnaire, interview and documentation were used as the instruments to get the data. The finding of this research showed that the students have positive perception in toward video project as media in improving their speaking skills. The students agreed that the video project developed their confidence to speak. Students find their strength in speaking in their confidence in front of the camera. The students felt they found some of their weaknesses in the video project, especially in pronunciation they had to take it back several times if there was a pronunciation error and this became one of their weaknesses in speaking English. They also find their strength in their self-confidence which makes them not feel nervous when they already have experience speaking through video projects because of the fun nature of videos. For the further study, it is expected for other researchers to explore more about the use of video project as media.</p> Dita Dwi Lestani Noeris Meiristiani Anin Eka Sulistyawati Copyright (c) 2023 2023-08-31 2023-08-31 1 7 The Correlation Between Students’ Vocabulary Mastery and Their Speaking Ability in Describing Picture https://semnas.upstegal.ac.id/index.php/icotion/article/view/626 <p>The objective of this research is to find out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability in describing picture in second-semester students of English education at Universitas Pancasakti Tegal. The research methodology employed was pre-experimental research with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students (117 students) at SMP Negeri 3 Tegal, and a sample of 22 students was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data collection involved conducting pretests and posttests, and the data were analyzed using the research data analysis formula and SPSS 22 application. The pretest mean score indicated that students' ability in writing Recount text before using the Canva application was 62.636. After implementing the Canva application, there was a noticeable effect, as evidenced by the posttest mean score of 70.59. To further support the findings, scientific calculations were performed using the SPSS application. Since the Sig. value was less than 0.05, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, indicating that the Canva application is effective in improving writing skills. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the use of the Canva application has a significant impact on students' ability to write Recount text in the eighth-grade class at SMP Negeri 3 Tegal. This suggests that students should engage in more writing practice using the Canva application, and teachers are recommended to incorporate Canva into their writing instruction, particularly for Recount text.</p> Elmira Noer Shaumi Copyright (c) 2023 2023-08-31 2023-08-31 13 24 The Efect of Using the Snowball Throwing Technique on Improving Students’ Speaking Ability https://semnas.upstegal.ac.id/index.php/icotion/article/view/629 <p>This study was undertaken to find out the students' perception of the implementation of the snowball throwing technique on improving the speaking ability of eighth grade students at SMP N 2 Adiwerna and to find out whether the snowball throwing technique is an effective technique for improving students’ speaking ability or not. In this research, the population is eighth grade students of SMP N 2 Adiwerna in the academic year 2022/2023. The researcher used cluster random sampling with a two-group design: VIII A as the experimental group and VIII C as the control group, which each had a total of 31 students. The research was conducted in three phases: pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The experimental group used the snowball throwing technique, while the control group was taught the conventional method as the treatment. The results of data analysis using a simple paired t-test obtained a significance value of 0.000. Thus, the t-test result is less than 0,050. According to the results of the data, alternative hypothesis is accepted and null hypothesis is rejected. It means there is an effect of using the Snowball Throwing Technique on improving students' speaking ability, which was conducted with eighth grade students at SMP N 2 Adiwerna. So according to the analysis, it can be concluded that it is proven that using the snowball throwing technique improves students' speaking abilities. This is caused by internal and external factors. This insecurity arises consciously or unconsciously, adolescents experience an unfavorable event and have a negative view of themselves. The purpose of this study: (1) reveal the characteristics of adolescents who experience insecure feelings (2) understand the factors that cause insecure feelings in adolescents (3) know the impact of insecure feelings on self-adjustment that occurs in adolescents. The research used a descriptive qualitative research approach, data collection techniques using observation, interviews and documentation. The subjects of this study were adolescents who felt insecure. The results showed that the characteristics of adolescents who experience insecure are low self-esteem, comparing themselves and thirsting for praise and recognition from others. The factors that cause adolescents to feel insecure are internal factors, namely focusing on their own shortcomings and perfectionism. As for external factors, namely experiencing failure and getting unfavorable judgment from others. And the impact of insecure adolescents on self-adjustment is negative thinking and considering themselves worthless.
